PN Africa raises concerns over Speaker Bagbin’s refusal to recognize Afenyo-Markin as Majority Leader

Sammy Obeng Sammy Obeng

Sammy Obeng, Executive Director of Parliamentary Network Africa, has raised concerns over Speaker Alban Bagbin’s refusal to acknowledge Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Majority Leader in Parliament.

The issue arose after Speaker Bagbin declined an NPP request for an emergency recall of Parliament, referring to Afenyo-Markin as "Leader of Government Business" instead of Majority Leader—a title upheld by a recent Supreme Court ruling.

Speaking on Starr Today, Obeng described the Speaker’s stance as troubling, emphasizing its potential to deepen divisions in Parliament. He noted that such actions could undermine efforts to resolve ongoing parliamentary disputes and impact leadership dynamics.

While acknowledging that the Speaker may have his reasons, Obeng stressed that this move complicates the perception of unity and order within Parliament, potentially affecting its operational integrity.
