Vacant seats saga: Afenyo-Markin and Ato Forson sign memos to Speaker as ‘Majority Leader’

The Supreme Court's November 12 verdict declaring Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling on four vacant parliamentary seats unconstitutional upheld the NPP’s majority in Parliament. Despite this, tensions persist over parliamentary leadership.

On November 22, Alexander Afenyo-Markin petitioned Speaker Bagbin to recall Parliament for critical government business, including approving tax exemptions, a $250 million stability fund, and mining lease ratifications.

In a November 25 memo, NDC MP Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson also addressed the Speaker, signing as "Majority Leader." He opposed the recall, arguing it was ill-timed with elections imminent and a potential drain on taxpayers.

Dr. Forson urged prioritizing credible elections and suggested resolving parliamentary disputes post-election through leadership dialogue.
