Bagbin to write to AG for advice on anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced plans to seek guidance from Ghana’s new Attorney General and Minister for Justice on advancing the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Addressing Ghanaians in Côte d’Ivoire on January 26, 2025, Bagbin emphasized the urgency of passing the bill, which Parliament had previously approved but was not assented to by former President Akufo-Addo, a move Bagbin described as unconstitutional.

“The LGBTQ bill was passed by Parliament, and the former president refused to assent to it, which was unconstitutional,” Bagbin stated, affirming Parliament's authority as the sole legislative body.

Bagbin expressed confidence that the bill would be passed this year, reiterating its moral and cultural significance.

“I can lose my life because of that,” he declared, underscoring his personal commitment to seeing the legislation enacted.

The Speaker’s remarks reignite discussions on the contentious bill, which continues to draw attention both locally and internationally.
